MAN RAY
PORTRAIT OF ELSA SCHIAPARELLI
1931
Man Ray was introduced to Elsa Schiaparelli by Gabriel Picabia in the 1920s in New York and she posed for him many times thereafter.
In this portrait, she wears a long dress with a trompe l'oeil pattern painted in the style of an ancient Greek pleat, resulting from her collaboration with the painter Jean Dunand.
