JEAN-MICHEL FRANK
THE CAGE
1937
In 1937, the renowned decorator Jean-Michel Frank was commissioned to design the first Schiaparelli perfume boutique. It was inaugurated to coincide with the launch of the Shocking perfume. Elsa had previously entrusted him with the decoration of the salons of her couture house, which had been located since 1935 at the Hôtel de Fontpertuis, at the legendary address of 21 Place Vendôme.
For this new commission, Jean-Michel Frank designed a birdcage with a dual artistic and functional purpose. It was adorned with display cases to showcase Schiaparelli's latest perfume creations. This giant aviary was made of gilded bamboo framed by a black metal structure scattered with hand-painted, multicolored flowers. This innovative concept, along with the unusual window displays created by Bettina Bergery, a close friend of Salvador Dalí, attracted all of Paris and tourists of the time.
Jean-Michel Frank's cage is still installed today in the salons of 21, Place Vendôme.
