GEORGE HOYNINGEN HUENE
SCHIAPARELLI SWIMSUIT N°1
1928
This photograph by George Hoyningen-Huene is one of the most famous fashion photographs of the 20th century.
The image shows a bathing suit and matching socks from the first collection created by Elsa Schiaparelli in January 1928. At that time, her boutique was located at 4 rue de la Paix. The plaque at the building's entrance read "Schiaparelli – Pour le Sport" (Schiaparelli – For Sport). This graphic and elegant design draws inspiration from American modernism, characterized by its simplicity, fluid lines, contrasting colors, and use of black and white.
Published in the July 1928 issue of Vogue, "N°1" was modeled by Bettina Jones, who would later become Elsa Schiaparelli's right-hand woman under the name Bettina Bergery. The male model was photographer Horst P. Horst.
