MERET OPPENHEIM
SCHIAPARELLI METAL AND FUR BRACELET
1936
In the spring of 1936, the Swiss-German artist Meret Oppenheim offered Schiaparelli the design of a fur bracelet. The designer had it made and included it in her winter collection.
The meeting of these two female artists revolutionized not only fashion accessories but also the history of art. During a meeting at the Café de Flore, Picasso, noticing that Meret Oppenheim was wearing a fur bracelet, remarked that it was possible to create anything with this material. This observation is said to have inspired Meret Oppenheim's famous work, Déjeuner en fourrure (Luncheon in Fur), composed of a cup, a saucer, and a small spoon covered in fur.
She was the first female artist to be included in the collection of the MoMA in New York thanks to Déjeuner en fourrure (Luncheon in Fur).
