SALVADOR DALI
"DAY AND NIGHT CLOTHING"
1936
In his 1936 painting, Night and Day Clothes, Salvador Dali drew inspiration from the creations of Elsa Schiaparelli dating from the early 1930s.
This artwork depicts a garment reminiscent of two iconic Schiaparelli creations from this period: the zip dress and her work with shoulder lines. The first dresses with visible zippers were created by Elsa Schiaparelli as early as 1929. She launched her "hard chic" line with its very pronounced shoulders in 1931. These innovations were a sensation, particularly among Hollywood stars like Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford.
