FLOREA URSAE MAJORIS: “Dream of Star’s flowers” - Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2019

“They climbed in the night and the peace towards the starry sky, they forgot the Earth and its absurd horrors. They were together, they were content, each moment of happiness was an eternity”

René Barjavel, The Ice People

“If you love a flower that lives on a star,
it is sweet to look at the sky at night”

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

A lucky star. This was certainly true of Elsa and her life: an imaginative, precocious little girl overflowing with creativity and a strong sense of independence. Giovanni, Elsa’s uncle, is most likely the one who found her lucky star as he studied the galaxy in his observatory in Brera. A kind man, Giovanni noticed an abundance of freckles on Elsa’s cheek, and compared it to the “Ursa Major” constellation. These beautiful memories of astronomy, and of the flowers that filled her carefree days of child’s play in the gardens of the Palazzo Corsini, would stay with Elsa throughout her career.

With her profound love of nature and the botanical world, Elsa Schiaparelli illuminated her salons of Place Vendôme with stars, cosmos, floral compositions and bouquets like a leitmotif, long before the days of the Surrealists. As Elsa said herself “To have a face covered in flowers, like a heavenly garden, would indeed be a wonderful thing!” (Shocking Life, 1954) Leonor Fini would later design this imaginary face for the Shocking perfume bottle. Ursa Major would become Ela’s lucky charm, immortalised as a brooch Schlumberger created specially for her and which she wore like a talisman. With Elsa, flowers transformed into stars and stars turned flowers, sprinkling the cosmic labyrinth that were her salons with asteroids and fragrant petals. This micro big-bang, born from her wonderful childhood memories, forms the gravitating force around which SS19 is born, an astrological collection infused with horoscope signs, stars, the moon and the sun, collisions of fleeting comets, and interstellar elements blossoming out of the dark night sky.
