The Manchester Art Gallery hosts the 'Schiaparelli and Thirties Fashion' exhibition in tribute to Elsa Schiaparelli until 23 October 2016.
In the mid-20th century, fashion designer and artist Elsa Schiaparelli captivated a prestigious clientele of exceptional women including Marlene Dietrich and the future Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson.
The selection includes 25 iconic pieces by Schiaparelli divided into three major themes: the shape of the garment, the spectacular prints of the 30s and the rich embroidery characteristic of the Schiaparelli style.
Schiaparelli welcomed guests to the Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016 in the Salle des Tirages of the Hôtel d’Evreux place Vendôme in Paris.
Natalie Dormer, Christine and The Queens, Laura Carmichael, Lady Kity Spencer, Isabelle Adjani, Marina Hands, Rossy de Palma, Maria Grazia Chiuri & Pierpaolo Piccioli, Olivia Palermo, Ines de la Fressange… just some of the attendees who turned out Monday January 25th at the Place Vendôme to discover Design Director Bertrand Guyon’s second Haute Couture collection for Schiaparelli.
“They have burdens round or square
drums and golden tambourines
Apes and bears wise animals
gather coins as they progress.”
Elsa Schiaparelli marvelled in the art of the oxymoron. A silhouette of pure, sharp contour is transcended by a vision of the ordinary becoming spectacular. It reveals a strong woman with Parisian allure and cosmopolitan fantasy. Today is about defining the essence of a style in fostering the paradoxes of such an eclectic personality.
Maison Schiaparelli invites you to discover its Fall/Winter 2016-17 Haute Couture collection on Monday July 4th 2016.
