The first fashion collaboration between Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali took place in 1936 when he gave his friend a drawing bearing this inscription: "Tailored suit with semi-rigid and soft drawers, fabric imitating stripped chain, drawer handles in natural oak - For Schiaparelli. Her friend Salvador Dali, 1936".

This design led to a series of suits and coats with drawer pockets that Schiaparelli presented for the Haute Couture Winter 1936-1937 collection. Made from navy blue velvet, the suit was adorned with five drawer pockets with black plastic button-handles.

Cecil Beaton immortalized these creations in a series of photographs with a surreal atmosphere, published in Vogue magazine in 1936.
