CHRISTIAN BÉRARD
ILLUSTRATION OF PRINCESS PONIATOWSKA WEARING A SCHIAPARELLI OUTFIT
1937
This vibrant illustration by Christian Bérard presents a key silhouette of the Schiaparelli style. Indeed, from the early 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli was the first couturier to suggest pairing evening jackets with long dresses. Here, it is a pink canvas jacket, embroidered with flowers, worn with a long, fitted silk chiffon skirt from the Autumn 1937 Haute Couture collection. The butterfly in the center is a reference to her famous earlier collection inspired by butterflies.
Elsa Schiaparelli held her friend Christian Bérard, known as "Bébé," in high esteem. In her autobiography, *Shocking Life*, she wrote of him, "To be approved of, admired, sometimes even loved by Bébé, was a consecration in the artistic, intellectual, and social circles of Paris." A multi-talented artist, Christian Bérard collaborated with Elsa Schiaparelli on numerous occasions. He created fashion illustrations, exclusive printed designs, and even a painted screen for the living room of her townhouse.
