In this photograph taken by Cecil Beaton at Candé Castle, Wallis Simpson – future Duchess of Windsor – is wearing a black evening suit, the jacket of which is adorned with a white leather appliqué.

This ensemble was one of 18 designs from the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Summer 1937 collection that Wallis Simpson had chosen for her spring wardrobe. It was one of Elsa Schiaparelli's most copied creations—it even makes a brief appearance in the 1938 film, Love Finds Andy Hardy.
